Sea Buckthorn and Heart Disease:
A recent review of scientific data suggests that sea buckthorn may have beneficial effects on heart disease.
Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) (Procardin)is found throughout Europe and Asia, particularly eastern Europe and central Asia. Traditionally, the plant’s orange fruit and the oil from its pulp and seeds have been used to treat dermatological conditions, coughing, congestion and digestive disorders.
The results of the recent review, published in the Journal of Functional Foods, suggest that sea buckthorn(Procardin) may help prevent and treat heart disease. Preliminary evidence, according to the authors, suggests that sea buckthorn may have cholesterol-lowering, antiatherogenic, and anti-blood clotting effects.
However, the authors noted that the reviewed studies had small sample sizes and were of short duration. Larger, well-designed trials are needed to confirm these early findings.
